Big Daddy’s Mardi Gras Crown Cookies

From Disney Family

Being the wealthiest sugar baron in the south and the adoring father of a determined New Orleans debutante, there’s no better candidate for Mardi Gras King than Big Daddy La Bouff. These cookie crowns, decorated with yellow, green, and purple candies sport the Mardi Gras colors and make a fitting treat to honor the affable patriarch of the parade.

  • Scissors (or crown-shaped cookie cutter)
  • Flour
  • Waxed paper
  • Rolling pin
  • Sugar cookie dough, storebought or homemade
  • Kitchen knife
  • Spatula
  • Tray
  • Baking sheets
  • Yellow colored sugar
  • Wire rack
  • Tube of decorator icing
  • Green, yellow, and purple candies (such as Skittles)

Helpful Tip

Cutting should be done by an adult.

  1. If you’re using the template, print and cut it out. You can print the template here.
  2. On a sheet of flour-dusted waxed paper, roll out the sugar cookie dough to the thickness specified on the package (or in the recipe).
  3. Place the template on the dough. Use a kitchen knife to cut around it and then transfer the dough crown to a waxed-paper lined tray. Repeat until you’ve used up the dough. Chill the cookies on the tray for 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat the oven to the proper temperature.
  4. Have your child sprinkle the chilled cookies with yellow colored sugar. Then transfer them to a baking sheet and bake them as specified.
  5. Transfer the cookies to the wire rack to cool completely.
  6. Now your child can decorate the crowns, using decorator icing to “glue” on candy jewels.
