I’ve been to Walt Disney World many times, and most of them were road trips. It’s tradition in my family to stop at each states welcome center to stretch our legs and check it out. One of our favorite welcome centers is at the Florida line. Why? Because it comes with refreshments! A delicious cup of orange juice, grapefruit juice, or both. But there’s been a change that has truly saddened me.
Due to budget cuts, the juice is no longer being served. In 2015, the Governor cut funding to the program, but the Florida Dept. of Citrus saved the day and provided the necessary $250,000/year to continue the service. The department went from $18 million per year to $15 million, this eliminating the juice program.
The program has been in place since 1949, and longtime visitors of the welcome center are not happy with the change, myself included. Employees say they are asked all day, every day about the juice, and in some instances, have been fussed at for the discontinuation.
