When singer-turned-fashion designer Jessica Simpson shared a picture of her daughter, Maxwell, sporting purple hair on Instagram on Tuesday, I don’t think she got the response she was looking for. Instead of supportive comments, some fans responded by mommy-shaming her for allowing the 7-year-old to dye her hair.
In her post, Simpson said that her daughter’s new locks were inspired by Mal, or Maleficient, from the popular Disney TV movie series “Descendants,” the latest of which premieres on Friday. In the series, Mal, one of the lead characters, rocks bright purple hair.
Soon after the post was made, followers took to the comments and questioned her mommy skills in what we now call ‘mom shaming’.
“So young it’s a shame” wrote one follower. “Isn’t she too young to have her hair dyed?” wrote another. “What’re u doing she is so young now out there for all the wrong reasons” from another. While there were plenty of negative, many came to Simpson’s defense. Followers applauded the new do with comments, including one from the IG disneydescendants themselves! The comment “Looking Good” came from the Descendants, while others commented that the new style allowed her daughter to express herself and that she looked beautiful.
So now I pose the question to you. How young is too young to dye hair? Is there a cutoff age? Share what you think in the comments!
